Why should I volunteer?
People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. 

For some, volunteering offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge.

Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.

Here are just a few reasons to volunteer:

  • Help your community

  • Meet people and making friends

  • Gain confidence and improve your self esteem

  • Feel valued and part of a team

  • Gain experience to becoming more employable

  • Try a new type of work e.g. working with children/elderly

  • Strengthen your CV

What can I do as a volunteer?
There are many types of volunteering opportunities for you to choose from. You could decide to use skills you already have or use volunteering to try something new. Many organisations will even offer you training as a volunteer, so volunteer work is an opportunity to learn new things.

Here are a few examples of volunteering opportunities that may be available at MRC Community Action:

  • Administration - Help on Reception or in various departments with a range of office and administration duties.

  • Retail Assistant - Sorting donations of clothes and books, arranging window displays and use of the till.

  • IT - Show other volunteers and staff how to use computers effectively.

  • REACT Furniture Warehouse - There’s a wood workshop, electrical workshop, van crew opportunities to help deliver and collect items of furniture, administration and sales using an EPOS system.

  • Dragons Den Soft Play - Soft play sessions are held three times a week for 0-5 year olds - we have opportunities to prepare food for the cafe in Little Dragon’s Den.

  • Volunteer Driver - Taking people to important health related appointments or help out with administration duties in the Community Transport Department or help out as a chaperone on the elderly shopping trips.

  • Community Lunch - Preparing hot meals or entertaining our elderly guests.

How old do you have to be to volunteer?
There is no legal age limit to volunteering but we do have a minimum and maximum age limit due to insurance policies for certain age groups (such as under 16s and over 80s).

Often, when a group meets a volunteer who they feel offer something worthwhile, a phone call to their insurers can extend the age limit but this is entirely a decision for the organisation.

I’ve applied for a volunteer role but not heard anything.
What should I do?


MRC Community Action is a small charity, volunteer applications have to go through a process and those involved in this process work different hours.

Please be patient. If you have any queries, please contact us.

Do I need Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks?
This will depend on the volunteer role that you are doing. If you are working with children or vulnerable adults, you can expect to be asked to complete a DBS check. 

This will involve you filling in a form giving your name, current and previous addresses and giving proof of who you are and where you live but it shouldn’t cost you anything!
